'Hot insert' debugging tool for Motorola 68HC12 eliminates downtime in live systems

68HC12 Hot Insert Debugging specialist Noral Micrologics has developed the first Motorola 68HC12 BDM (background debug mode) tool that can be connected to a live embedded target without the need for system reset. The compact and portable 'Hot Insert' tool is particularly suited to on-site debugging in environments where the 68HC12 application must operate for 24 hours a day, seven days a week with zero downtime.

Fully compatible with all members of Motorola's 68HC12 processor family, Noral's handheld, 'Hot Insert' Flex-BDM/68HC12 is ideal for debugging live systems requiring the identification and rectification of intermittent problems that disappear at system reset. Traditional in-circuit emulation techniques can not be used in these environments as they require the target to be switched off prior to connection of the emulator probe.

'Hot Insert' Flex/BDM-68HC12 can be used with Noral's Flex real-time debugger software to provide the developer with the same on-site debugging functionality that is available during initial system development. This includes viewing the target in original 'C' source code format, reading and modifying target variables and on-chip peripheral control registers and configuring hardware breakpoints and execution breaks. The ability to single-step 'C' source code from all memory areas including Flash and EEPROM is particularly useful in live systems where it is not practical to replace read only memory with RAM devices.

Connection to the target is via a standard 6+4 way cable that extends the basic six-way BDM specification to provide extended functionality including dynamic baud rate reconfiguration and control of target start-up mode. Noral's Flex software is a high-level debugger designed to run under Windows NT/95/3.1 and capable of integration with all popular embedded system development environments. The software is fully compatible with all 68HC12 software toolchains, allowing developers to choose their own preferred C/C++ compilers. An integrated macro language automates repetitive procedures and simplifies application-specific tests.
