68HC12 Application Note

If you are considering the inclusion of a BDM connector in your 68HC12 target design, please review our application note detailing the enhanced BDM connection before limiting the BDM support to just the standard 6-way BDM connector. There are significant advantages to be gained during your debug phase by making more signals available for your BDM hardware.

Real-Time Debugging for 68HC12 Devices

Noral's BDM solutions are different from the common BDM cables supplied by many vendors because our BDM tools include custom logic and a control processor. This advanced design extends the functionality of Noral's BDM debuggers well beyond that of the standard cable based systems.

Advanced BDM Features

Flex-BDM/68HC12 is different from the common BDM cable solutions because Flex-BDM/68HC12 includes custom logic and a control processor, enhancing the debugging capabilities beyond the basic BDM specification. For example, Flex-BDM/68HC12’s unique support for the ECLK, MODA and MODB signals as well as the standard 6-way BDM connection maximises debugger performance:-
  • ECLK can be used to synchronise communications allowing debug data to flow freely between target and debugger without interruptions due to changes in the target's clock frequency, for example whengoing into low power mode.
  • MODA and MODB can be used to control the 68HC12's operating mode following reset. So if the target system does not power-up in the operating mode required for BDM debugging, the mode can be automatically configured by the BDM hardware and debugger.

Flex-BDM/68HC12 supports hot insertion so you can connect to your target and start debugging without breaking target execution. Flex-BDM/68HC12 can also be used to program on-chip flash memory.

The hardware's high speed bi-directional parallel communications interface produces very fast debugger response to changes within your target so you don’t waste time waiting for window updates.

Special electrical protection ensures that there are no target power up restrictions and that your PC is 100% protected from the target’s own electrical environment.

Target signals, such as Vcc, ECLK and target reset, are monitored in real-time providing you with instant information about conditions within your 68HC12 embedded system.
